I try to create my own reference material when I can, but the composition of this painting came mainly from a photograph I found in the Pennstater, Penn State's Alumni magazine, May 7, 2009. I loved to paint the mallard subject, but it was the swirling reflections in the water that captivated me. That's where the title came from. I expanded on water's ability to either give us reflection or, in shadow, allow us to see through the water.
It was with the aid of a sponge that I created the rock textures.
